Udaipur, India is the capital of the erstwhile Kingdom of Mewar, one of the oldest surviving dynasties in the world. The city was established around 1567 A.D. Legend has it that the royal Rajput rulers are descendants of the Sun God. The golden sun is still the royal insignia of the Maharana of Mewar. The city boasts of some of the most scenic lakes, earning it the nickname of 'City of Lakes'.

An artificial fresh water lake, created in the year 1362 AD, named after the nearby Picholi village. The lake's surroundings and the several islands within the lake have been developed over the centuries, with palaces, marble temples, family mansions, and bathing ghats. The famous Lake Palace (now converted into a heritage hotel) is located in the middle of the lake.

The Crystal Gallery in Fateh Prakash Palace houses the world's single largest private collection of crystal under one roof. This exquisite collection of Osler crystal was ordered from England by Maharana Sajjan Singh in 1877. The collection includes glasses, tableware and even furniture. It also houses the only crystal bed in the world.

Shilpgram

A living ethnographic museum depicting the enormous diversities in rural folk art and culture, Shilpgram literally means 'Craftsmen's Village'. Built over 70 acres with 26 huts, Shilpgram represents the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Goa and Daman. There are numerous displays, workshops and live performances throughout the day. There are many activities such as camel rides for the children.

Kumbalgarh Fort

Kumbalgarh Fort

Keep a day aside to visit the Kumbalgarh Fort and witness one of Mewar's greatest warriors, Rana Kumbha's architectural marvel. Featuring 7 massive gates and 7 ramparts, one within the other, the Kumbalgarh Fort is strengthened by rounded bastions and towers while enclosing a smaller fort with numerous temples. It is open from 10 am till 6 pm.

Sri Eklingji Temple

Sri Eklingji Temple

Located in a remote mountain pass, 25 kms away from Hotel Rajdarshan Udaipur, the temple of Ek Lingji was chiselled out of a sandstone and marble. Originally built in 734 AD and rebuilt in the 15th century, Ek Lingji, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, is the principle deity of the people of Udaipur. The complex of 108 temples is built on the shore of a lake and enclosed by high walls.

Nagada Temples

Nagada Temples

The Nagada temples date back to the 6th century. This temple complex is located 2 kilometres north of Sri Ek Lingji and 25 kilometres from Hotel Rajdarshan Udaipur. The most famous temple, the Sahastra Bahu, means 'One with the thousand arms. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. However, over the years, these are popularly known as the 'Saas-Bahu' temples, implying mother-in-law and daughter-in-law temples. Both are constructed on a common platform.

Jaisamad Lake

Jaisamad Lake

The Jaisamad Lake is an artificial lake built by Maharana Jai Singh. It is also the second largest lake in Asia. Graceful marble chatris flank the embankment and beautiful summer palaces of the Udaipur queens are built on either side. A trip to Jaisamand Wild Life Sanctuary allows close encounters with wild boar, deer, four-horned antelope, mongoose and various migratory birds.
